an eye-witness account of our amazing family adventures

Sunday September 30th

We enjoyed sleeping in a bit on Sunday morning. When we did finally rouse from our beds we went to work setting up the remainder of our campsite. The boys were thrilled to at last be enjoying the "campin' twip" we had been looking forward to for so many days.

They scouted and explored our campsite thoroughly, as if to lay claim on their new found territory. They seemed pleased with our work, after checking every aspect of our campsite they gave their hearty seal of approval.

Our breakfast consisted of instant oatmeal and powdered sugar dough nuts.

(Notice them sharing the dough nuts above and Owen's sugar coated mouth @ left).

Note: Throughout this camping trip we did not encounter any pesky animals though we did discover a kinsman of the raccoon, Clay was empowered by the idea of opening the ice chest of his own free will and plucking from its belongings anything he desired.
I submit to you: Exhibit A...

This exercise of freedom cost him two days of the worst diaper rash he has ever experienced, though I beleive he thought it was well worth it.

We set out over Cumbres pass after breakfast. The Cumbres & Toltec railroad runs up over the pass. We enjoyed watching the old train wind its way up the pass hauling its passengers, each enjoying the mountain air and beautiful hillsides covered with aspen trees which seemed to glow in their fiery autumn hues of orange and yellow.

At the top of the pass is a lake called:
Trujillo Meadows

Owen enjoyed throwing a few rocks into the water and then setting off on a little hike around the edge of the lake with daddy.

Clay was taking his morning nap in the car, no doubt worn out from all the excitement encountered during the inspection of our campsite earlier in the morning.

We were back at our camp for the noonday meal. Lunch was a new recipe: Pie Iron Pizzas. They were delicious! Of course, our camp chef cooked them to perfection...

An afternoon nap was enjoyed by all and when we awoke, Owen was put in charge of preparing our dinner which was another new recipe:
Dutch Oven Pot Pie.

A budding camp chef, he handled himself with confidence and presented us with some incredibly scrumptious vittles. Here is our little chef with the finished product.

While settling into our camper for the night, the boys got a few camping surprises: A flashlight projector and glow sticks (purchased from the $1 aisle at Target the week before). We all slept well with visions of the adventures to come...

What a great recount...and the pictures are precious...especially the one of your "kinsman of the raccoon" and "proud budding chef".

It makes me want to go on a Robinson Camping Twip! I mean, if you can hack it at 8 months pregnant, I can't really use being 7 months along as much of an excuse, now can I?
